In Newnham the old road running down from the main street to the river is still there with a quay at the bottom, at least when I was last there a couple of years ago.

I remember my late father telling me about going out on his bike from the Forest of Dean round to the other side of the Severn and wishing that the ferry was still running to cut short the journey back; instead it was a long detour round Gloucester.

I've got his old OS maps from the 50's or 60's that might show the ferry.

--
JeremyBluebearhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16401656301934358400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2299006518616360287.post-18381011441655075012013-10-14T21:30:11.600+01:002013-10-14T21:30:11.600+01:00Thanks for your comments Stan (that you have now r...Thanks for your comments Stan (that you have now removed). Interesting that you feel that sense of place and landscape are an artistic myth disseminated to the people. I think the exact opposite - place and landscape are organically democratic and human notions, they can be whatever you want them to be and are free from any narrow confines within which some might want to constrain them. Perhaps we agree after all.

All the best

Eddie Eddie Procter (Landscapism)https://www.blogger.com/profile/10196792135158959223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2299006518616360287.post-78360535424213840762013-10-13T17:58:57.438+01:002013-10-13T17:58:57.438+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.stan bonnarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03067240781505750187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2299006518616360287.post-69329280420026151492013-10-13T16:23:41.742+01:002013-10-13T16:23:41.742+01:00Thank you. Having said that there are lots of very dedicated groups out there ensuring that this heritage is not lost altogether.

And thanks for spotting the spelling error. Here in the central belt of
Scotland there's a similar wealth of industrial archaeology likewise neglected. It's good to know someone's at least recording it. One small nit to be picked. I think you meant a "discreet" plaque. "discrete" means scattered about all over the place.
CarolAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2299006518616360287.post-14085781486691968892013-10-13T12:24:39.085+01:002013-10-13T12:24:39.085+01:00Great article. The info you provide here will give me lots to look out for on my next visit. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06972039294160032628noreply@blogger.com
